Recording History

Bush Mill was built in 1896, the metal wheel replacing a wooden one in 1926. This is the only operational mill left in the county where I live, and it only operates once a year. Funds have been secured and the mill is undergoing a major renovation to help preserve it. A number of old timers remember when the mill was the center of the community. The Tourism Council spent the day preserving some of those memories for future generations. I do not know the man being recorded in this photo. My father-in-law remembers his father putting him on a horse at the age of 10 with a turn of wheat in front and a a turn of corn behind, to go to the mill, several miles away, and have it ground. Payment was a portion of the ground flour or meal.
Awesome

@kerristephens @danette Thanks! I know this isn't a stellar photo, just documenting some history... but whatever this man shared had the interviewer crying by the time he finished... can't wait to hear/see his story!

@maggiemae The mill is operated by water power. The meal is ground between two millstones.

What a great storey. We have lost so many traditional water & wind mills; I hope it is well preserved.
