Built in 1068 by William the Conqueror. He ordered a castle / stronghold to be built in a bid to control the rebellious north!
The observatory tower was constructed by the Victorians! They thought the castle didn’t comply with their idea of castles with turrets, hence the style!
The National Trust guide at Chedworth Roman Villa in Gloucestershire called the Victorians ‘archeological vandals’ if you remember for what they did there, and he’d prob say it for this also.
