This is the start of Lincoln’s Steep Hill. This bit is reasonably gentle, there are three further, steeper parts before you reach Castle Square at the top. I probably climb this 2 - 3 times a year, for various events.
Oh I remember this hill, it was a killer. I also remember J Birkett's shop too, but I think when we lived in Lincoln in '69-71 it was on the other side of the street and it was a double shop. I think it was an electronics shop and they also used to fix tv's and radios. Probably not much call for that now.
