Or at least I think it is, our bird book also gave the option of it being a juvenile. It was bigger than the male black birds though, so I suspect that even if is a juvenile it’s female.
It is a very young Blackbird, Carole, but both male and female youngsters look very similar till much later in the year. Apart from the plumage, the clue is the bright yellow area, near the base of the beak. Called the gape, when a young bird in a nest opens its mouth, often in not very good light, the inside of the mouth is bright yellow. This is like a target for the parents to aim at with their food.
