Phil & I have been to his annual army reunion today ( 16 months late). When we were heading back to our car later we passed this unusual building. The wording on that blue plaque , can be read when zoomed in on the original photo, I have no idea why, but once uploaded it is not legible, even though the picture is the same, no cropping etc. That plaque says:
The Roundhouse was built in 1827, by Sutton’s, a local firm of builders. It was originally built as a “lock up” for the temporary restraint of criminals, drunks or other nuisances & was recorded as the parish prison in the 1851 census. It was later used to house the village fire engine, then the village bier for carrying coffins. In more recent times it has been used as exhibition room.
This unusual building is in the Village of Barrow Upon Soar, near to my home town. Even more interesting to me, is that my mother’s grandmother was born in this village, in fact , in the same street as this building. So it’s odd to think that she will have seen it / walked past it & I was stood in front of it today!
If you zoom in on the windows, you will find a selfie & an evening sky!
What an interesting shot and story. I have always loved round buildings. I went to nursery school in a round building that was once a playhouse theatre and have been in love with round buildings ever since.
Super history here and you’ve made such a strong connection to it with your narrative… I’d seen the sky colors but not the selfie until I zoomed in… nicely done!

I think I didn’t see it because of the minuscule drop of alcohol that may have passed my lips during the afternoon.
