The present lighthouse was built in 1898.It had been a coastal landmark, guiding seafarers for many years, until it was made redundant by Trinity House in 1984.It is now a museum and can be reached twice daily at low tide. There are 137 steps to the lantern room.I remember climbing them as a child, and seeing the massive lantern in action. It's size was awesome!
The previous lighthouse had stood there for over 400 years.
I used to love exploring the rockpools,as a child, looking for small crabs, etc, and children are still doing that today.
The Island and surrounding area is a small nature reserve.
