View of The Turkish Sector of Nicosia from The Shacolas Tower Observatory

Nicosia, the capital city of Cyprus is to this day the only divided capital in the world. The invasion of Cyprus by Turkey in 1974 and the ensueing skirmishes between the two countries resulted in the partitioning of the island, the North occupied by Turkey (Turkish Cypriots) and the South by the Greek Cypriots. As fate would have it,the partition passed through Nicosia, the capital city of Cyprus.

The Northern and Southern portions are divided by a Green Line,The UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus maintains a buffer zone between the two.

Lovely view. We went to Cyprus many years ago and whilst driving around came to the North / South border which was guarded by armed guards. We were advised to turn around!

What a scenic view! But too bad about division... sure would be nice if everyone could just be kind and get along with one another...
