A Gaggle of Geese

These snow geese were digging in the snow (They are snow geese after all) looking for something to eat. Something I just found out, which you can file under "Useless Knowledge", they are only called a gaggle when they are on the ground. Once they take to the air they are called a skein.
They're beautiful! Are their heads a light brown, or is that from poking around in the dirt?

@iris52 Some of them have brown markings. I'm not sure why but it isn't dirt.

I would have loved to have seen a gaggle of these guys when were in Canada. We saw many skeins flying in the distance and one lone goose that was still too far away for a decent shot. (See it wasn't such useless information after all. )

Delightful with the snow underfoot. Gaggle is a delicious word, isn't it?

Good to know about the gaggle and skein. But a skein is a hank or ball of yarn. I will have to think about this to see if how the word is used would sort out the meaning.

Nice details of the goose in front.

@randystreat The collective nouns don’t often make sense. Murder of crows, for example. But they are rather fun. (Actually, now that I think about it it, when I hear a group of crows doing their awful caw, caw, cawing I feel like murdering them so maybe it makes sense after all:)
