My father was a working horologist - I used to love to tell people that. After WWII he came home and went to school to be a watch maker. He ended his working career making the timing mechanism for the Hellfire missiles that are still used today. He loved to work with his hands - and I remember them so well. They were arthritic and loving. He built this desk with those hands and each and every little drawer is jam packed with tools of the trade and watch parts. This is my office (if you want to call it that) and I moved the big girl computer in there. The only change to this desk from the time that I was a child is that Tom drilled a hole in the back for computer cords. Pudge, who you met in an earlier journal, is over on the side. She sort of looks over what happens. File cabinets, book cases and my mother's cedar chest are also in this room. The walls that you can't see are fitted as closet space - they built tiny closets in the 1890's. This room is getting a mini change over - just added the carpet to keep it warmer this winter (the builders also built this room with no register....) and some new drapes. I love this old house.
I LOVE the warm "feel" of this room, Cathy! It's so packed full of memories and beautiful furniture from your parents ... it must give you a wonderful feeling everytime that you go in there. I think that old houses are the greatest. Love everything about them ..the character especially. Thanks for the glimpse into your "work" room!
Great shot of a room with loads of character!! So glad to see a study as crammed as mine! Really love it, so full of interesting things. Will
It's one of my study tomorrow to compare!
How interesting. If I was there I'd spend hours looking at everything! One of these days, I hope to have my own workspace too- but for right now I share it with Jeff and his instruments, plus family when they come to visit. In other words, not much of my stuff is in there! But this looks like it's totally yours- that's great! Fun shot- and I love that you have your father's desk- what a treasure!
What a warm and colourful cosy place. I shall smile now thinking of you sitting there reading this and posting all your shots there. Your Dad was very clever :)
Cathy I love the composition of your photo and its story. Lovely to have a room with so much character and history such a comfortable room to pass the time.
Thanks for sharing a look into your lovely workspace , but (for me in UK) - what is a "register" please ? ("the builders also built this room with no register".). I'm intrigued.
@nightowl12 A register is a heat outlet. So for some reason they built this room with no heat source. When my Dad bought the house the year I was born it had an old coal furnace and I would watch him stoke it.
How wonderful for you to be using the desk your Dad built. It must bring him back to you every time you sit at it. I love 'lived in rooms' with character, minimalism is not for me (apart from when I need to dust, which I don't have much time for, now I'm a 365er!)

Thank you all for indulging me. I have to add that I just realized that one of my favorite photos of my Dad is visible in this shot all the way to the left on my bookcase. Have to enlarge to see him.
