Music is the word of the day today.
When I was in fifth grade I started playing clarinet. I continued with that all the way through high school - first chair. As the years went by I fell in love with singing. I took private lessons and tried out for University of Cincinnati's CCM when I was a senior in high school. I made it! They took 34 that year from across the country in voice. Ultimately, I wanted to teach music. This book is from my freshman year. You can see my handwritten notes. I went to college for two years. The pressure in a school like that was horrendous. Part of me was learning to sing in Italian, German and French and another part was putting on a pair of jeans and marching for Peace. It was such a different time. It was too easy for me to make the decision to marry this guy and walk away to a different life.
Your shot brings back a lot of memories. I played clarinet (concert band), tenor sax (jazz band) and tuba (marching band) in high school, as well as being in both chorus and chamber choir. Even played professionally in a 17-piece big band for a bit...then life got in the way.
I had the opportunity to study abroad while in college, but didn't want to spend a semester away from my boyfriend (who was about to become my fiance and then husband). Stupid decision- but all in all I don't regret making a poor choice there! The nice thing for you is that you can still sing no matter where you are. And interestingly enough when I did return to school I took four study trips, so I guess I got to study abroad anyway! I like the swirls of your music stand against the music book. A very nice composition!
I can't believe I missed the opportunity for word of the day "music." Not a day goes by without it for me. I love my job and I love hearing about YOUR musical past. Nice to get to know you a little bit better. I say get that clarinet back out and go for it. (You could find one pretty easy if you don't have it any more!) Pretty impressive singing ability - I hope you are still singing!
I love this shot! There is something very beautiful about musical notation. And I love your explanatory and nostalgic piece to go with it, beautifully expressed.
What a fabulous shot and story Cathy. I think that you have so much to tell. I hope that one day you get to be interviewed for 365 so that you can tell your life story, as well as your photographers story.
@seanoneill Sean that is very sweet. I don't have so much to tell, I just lived through the '60's and remember it. It was such a time of change in our country. I wouldn't have a clue what to say in an interview.
