I need some help! I went down to the riverfront last night to shoot fireworks after the Red's game. It was into extra innings and Tom had to work today so we left. I can shoot night shots just fine - but the big kleg lights (or whatever the word is) at the stadium just blew up the shot no matter what I tried. So, you can only see a tip of it to the right. How can I handle that?? my gurus.
I've had the same issues before. I know not. Avoid that bit of the skyline? Certainly there is an answer:). Super shot, though! Were you alone? Be safe. Maybe we can go sometime!
Unless you want the stadium in there, I'd crop it out. If you do, I'd be in the "fix it in post-processing" crowd. But I think there is probably a way to compensate for that beforehand. Now, this is just a guess, but, when I shot the Super Moon, the tutorials said to set the camera for daylight as the moon is reflecting the sun and is actually bright, but the camera would be looking at the dark sky and think "you need more light!". So, I'm thinking that you would need to trick the camera in a similar way because the stadium lights are actually as bright as daylight. But that's as far as my expertise goes!!!
What's the problem here...? I think it's a great shot, love how the lights are all reflecting on the water against that dark black sky.
If I've had a bright light (eg streetlight) bothering my shot I've sometimes held up a coat or hand or book to block the camera's view of it. Might that help or have I misunderstood?
Another option is to do exposure bracketing and process as HDR. You don't have to do the heavy stylized thing with HDR (like most of my recent posts)... You can get great clean shots that would otherwise be almost impossible.
