Determined

Olivia's team had a season-best game today, but that's not why I'm posting this photo. Here are my two reasons: 1) I love the look of determination on her face; and 2) I am determined to get better at taking shots inside the gym. I'm hoping later this year I'll be able to post a photo that is crystal clear, despite the weird lighting and reflective surfaces in the gym.
I'm sure this wasn't your intent, but the motion blur combined with your editing make this image almost magical. Very cool. Very good job with what I am assuming is a kit lens. Low light action is really hard, maybe impossible without a really fast lens. So keep at it, if you have a 50mm wide aperture, lens you might try that since this shot was taken at 55mm. I know the 50mm 1.8 lenses are quite common and very close to what you shot this at, that's why I ask. Then you could bump up your shutter speed while using a wider aperture. And depending on how well your camera can handle it, you might want to bump up the ISO as well. Fantastic picture, but if you want to freeze the action, you'll need a faster shutter speed. I'm curious, are you using a flash?

I too would like to be able to catch a crystal clear image in this kind of environment/setting... I think you're definitely on your way to achieving that, Great shot!

@rminkler Thanks so much! The more I look at it, the more I like it. Yes, I did use a flash (which is also a bummer because the turnover is slightly slower). And I do want to work on my clarity. Sometimes it's just positioning. I have my 3-year-old in the stands with me, so I'm not moving around to get the best vantage point--just trying to capture what I can. And the 50mm/1.8 is my standard--I use it 90 percent of the time. But I found that I actually got a little bit more clarity from the kit lens that came with my old starter DSLR (especially outdoors). I invested in a full-frame camera last summer and it has been magical, but next up is the zoom lens (which I don't have). For now, just trying to get better with the equipment I have. Thank you again for the input--I really appreciate it!

@elishajae and @heather4528 Thanks so much! I might rent a zoom lens next week for her final game of the season. I've done that for soccer and it was so much fun.

@cjoye I'm fairly certain that indoor sports photography with poor lighting is one of the most difficult things to capture. Great job so far. Keep it up and keep experimenting to see what works and what doesn't. My best guess is any way to increase your shutter speed should help freeze the action. And frozen action means less blur which means a crisper image. Of course a shallow dof and focusing on a moving subject bring their own set of challenges as well.

@rminkler I took some more photos of her last game on Saturday and repositioned myself at the ends of the court. What a difference that made! I may end up using one of the shots this week if I have a day where I don't take out my camera. Thanks again for the feedback!
