Happy World Adoption Day! by cjoye

Happy World Adoption Day!

This was the moment, four years ago, that my older daughter and I met our youngest (both of whom you frequently see featured in this project) in an orphanage in Ethiopia. While I did edit this photo, I obviously didn't take it--I handed my camera over to another mom who was waiting to meet her daughter and, to my great fortune, she happened to also be a photographer! So, in the spirit of marking today's special occasion, I am posting this photo and this message (thank you for indulging me):
Happy World Adoption Day! I've had a few arrows tossed my way because of how (relatively) public I have been with our lives, but from the very beginning I have felt strongly about showing how wonderful adoption can be and that families don't always look the way you might expect them to. For most of my life, adoption never even crossed my mind and now I can't imagine my life without these two treasures who were born to mothers on the other side of the world. Two little ones who call me mommy. As a very wise woman once said, the magnitude of that tragedy and the depth of that privilege are not lost on me. And at a time when our worlds seem to be so divided, I hope that when people look at my family they see the beauty in our differences and the love that has bound us together forever. #worldadoptionday
You are a beautiful family! Happy Adoption day!

Oh Christine, I saw this photo, and hadn't read your text yet and recognised your eldest and thought this must be the youngest. Brought tears to my eyes, so full of love! Beauty in differences, well said.
