Scared me! by cjwhite

Scared me!

I've been taking my pics in a different part of the hayfield for several days. The abundance of clover has attracted an abundance of butterflies. Butterflies always make me happy! The only downside to where I am taking pics is I have seen snakes in this area more than once. I try to watch the ground and the butterflies at the same time. I wasn't expecting to see this large insect! It was about two inches long and flying low. It seemed to be coming my way, so I was instantly on alert. I shoot wasps, bees, and spiders all the time. They are predictable. I didn't know what this insect might do. I haven't been stung by a wasp or bee in several years, but I am somewhat allergic. I decided I needed to go to the house and spray myself with insect repellent. It was in the same area when I got back. I'm sure the neighbors got a laugh at my expense once again. I kept trying to get a shot from a long distance. I was a tad jumpy! This is the best shot I snapped. I researched this big guy. It is an Eastern Cicada Killer. According to my research, they rarely sting humans. I will still give them a wide berth. I would hate to catch one having a bad day. :0)
Two inches long...wow! I enjoyed your commentary...I'm glad you're safe...and I'm glad you brought this interesting character to my attention. I'd never heard of them before.

The other day I saw a cicada killer. I also didn't know what it was until I looked it up. It gave me a fright because of its size but I to found that they rarely sting. I'm still going to keep my distance when I see them though. I tried taking a picture but it wasn't that great. I haven't seen one since but I hope I get another opportunity to take a picture. Anyways this is awesome. Well captured. Fav
