I was excited to see this Monarch today! I was worried that I wouldn't have any. The drought earlier in the summer killed most of the milkweed plants and the survivors are spindly. Milkweed is the host plant for Monarchs.
I actually saw two Monarchs today. I saw the second one on the other side of the "snake pit". Well, it's the snake pit in my mind. :0)
I wanted a pic of the second one, if I could get it. It was bigger. I sucked it up and gingerly walked through the high grass by the woods. I tried to look at the ground and keep the butterfly in sight. Just as I got in pic range, the two Monarchs flew up together and gracefully flew away. Far away! I watched them go and then made my way back out of the snake zone. I didn't see any snakes, but the butterfly show was worth the adventure. :0)
Thank you for your nice comments and faves on yesterday's Lynx Spider! :0)
Magnificent shot and so glad to hear they've survived. They are great travellers; in Australia they are called the Wanderer, although Monarch is beginning to take over in popular parlance.
Glad they had some success. Where you had fewer, we had more than usual out here. Something about the winds and weather pushed them up as far as Edmonton!
Beautiful capture...glad the snakes were busy elsewhere for you.
