This wild turkey did literally fall from the sky. I was in the hayfield taking pics of a ladybug. I was in my pic zone, the one where you don't know what's going on around you. A loud flapping sound caught my attention. I looked up and there was a wild turkey hen about five or six feet away. I'm guessing she flew from across the road. I've been trying to get a wild turkey pic forever, so I started clicking. She kept coming closer and I realized how big she really was. I'm not well versed on wild turkeys, but her eye contact was making me a tad nervous. I think I've watched too many when animals attack shows. I rarely retreat first from a pic, but I did this time. Some of the cats were with me and I think they actually thought about chasing her. This wasn't a little birdie. This was a HUGE BIRD! Fortunately, they changed their minds. No humans or cats were harmed in the taking of this pic. :0)
What a fantastic shot! The detail is amazing. Definitely no ladybug. Were you down low shooting that ladybug when this turkey arrived? Maybe that's why she didn't seem bothered by you - or maybe she thought she was bigger! That is one beauty!
Brilliant shot. Turkeys and vultures always remind me of how near birds are to dinosaurs. Look at that head and neck! On the bright side there's not much room for a brain in there. :-)
I've seen wild turkeys a couple of times, but have never gotten a shot of them.
