Originally, I set this shot up because I thought it would be cool to get the musical notation reflected in the body of the flute. But the reality was that I couldn’t get the lighting right without creating loads of shiny spots and it wasn’t soft enough. Then I tried “available light” only but ended up with a deep shadow between the flute and the paper and not much reflection to photograph. After a coffee, I had a “lightbulb” moment (literally!) when I realised that I have sheet music on my iPad ….. so the illuminated iPad screen became a sort of lightbox. The image turned out different from my original idea, but I do love to play with light …..
