The beach police are often around on the major public beaches during crowded summery days, just to keep an eye on things, and to maintain peace and harmony.
Alcohol is permitted on public beaches, and there are occasions when groups of folk may get a little too turbulent, rowdy and raucous - be it with or without alcohol. A pressing concern is for people who aren't good swimmers, if they can swim at all. They tend to go too far out on those plastic floating beds, can't get back, and the police then get involved. Or there is some sort of boating incident that requires intervention.
One day we will hopefully have professional lifeguards on duty on public beaches, particularly during peak periods. Until such time, the police and Coast Guard keep a watch on public safety.
