This is one of Historic Charleston's oldest houses and one of the most beautiful examples of Georgian architecture. According to the plaque on the iron gate in front of the house, it was built between 1765 and 1769 by Miles Brewton, a Revolutionary War patriot. The architect was Ezra White. It was inherited in 1775 by Brewton's sister, Rebecca Motte, a Revolutionary heroine, in whose family the house has remained. It was British headquarters in Charleston during the Revolutionary War from 1780-1782 under Generals Clinton and Rawdon. During the Civil War it was Union headquarters in Charleston in 1865.
