on a guided bike tour. The Berlin Wall was far more than just a wall. It embodied the pain of separation suffered by families and communities during the German division following World War II, and was the most potent symbol of the global struggle between communism and capitalism during the Cold War.
What touched me most were the stories of the people who died at the Wall through escape or accidents. There were also children there.
I have many memories of Berlin, in 1968 whilst there as a college student I was on both sides of the wall. I remember being very frightened as we passed through Checkpoint Charlie! My last visit was on 9-11 though we didn’t find out what happened until we were back at the hotel in Potsdam.

The plaques are at the memorial on Bernauer Strasse. Maybe they weren't there then.
Thank you!
