Farewell to linens

I've been saving up worn out altar linens for years now, putting of disposing of them properly by burning them. Last night was a perfect evening for a fire.
contrast between the orange flames and the ashes
out of interest is there then a correct way of disposing them out of service ?

@philcameron59 Burning them is the approved method. I used paper and wood to get the fire going, no fuels. Dug a hole for the ashes.

How does an altar linen ever get worn out?
I am amazed there is a proper way to dispose of them, and not recycle the material. Something new learned everyday - and great pic too :)

@rvm The small linens get washed and pressed every week and the fibers breakdown. I've tried recycling the linen, making things out of the parts without holes but when the fabric has had it, it's had it.

@corktownmum Obviously I have no idea what an altar linen is :)
I assumed it was the large table cloth thing that covers the altar so people can hide the Christmas crib under it...
That seems to be where many small country churches put theirs!

Amazing - looks like fire and water mixed.
