In 1778 John Paul Jones tried to invade Whitehaven but due to rough tides, becoming stuck in the mud and too much booze they fled. This is one of the sculptures around Whitehaven harbour showing a gun being spiked.
Apparently that was all Jones and his boys were able to accomplish that night besides quaffing a few drinks at the pub. He was quite the troublemaker though.
