all that remains of the West Pier at Brighton, U.K. It opened in 1866 and closed in 1975. In 1916 a concert hall was added and at the peak of its popularity in 1918/1919 it had 2 million visitors. However, after its closure in 1975, it fell into disrepair and bad storms destroyed part of the walkway cutting it off from the land. When it caught fire (believed to be arson) in in 2003 fire crews were unable to reach it. Now this is all that remains.
