this ha ha wall was built around the grounds of the old South Australian Hospital for Criminal Mental Defectives. Designed to look like a normal low wall on the outside it had a deep trench on the inside so the patients could not climb it to escape. The hospital was built around 1885.

thanks for your comments. These type of walls were also evidently used on large estates in England to keep the deer enclosed and to give an uninterrupted view of the countryside.
