On one of the hotest evenings of the year so far some guys on bikes rolled into town, accompanied by a TV crew.
Roads were closed
barriers errected
and half the town rolled out to witness the spectacle.
Most of the spectators hadn't a clue what was happening, or who were the front runners and who was being lapped
but fortunately there was a running commentary broadcast on Church Green West.
The circuit was gruelling, including an evil climb, and a speedy descent, before they did the whole thing again and again. The whole thing was rather reminiscent of watching your hamster trundle away on his wheel, except these lads were wearing lycra not fur coats, and still they were sweating!
Had they gone straight on at the Golden Cross, they could have popped into the shopping centre parallel to Unicorn Hill and used the escalators!
Unicorn Hill - rather a strange name, and after the broadcast on Channel 4 this evening, everyone will have heard of it. In case you were wondering, the Unicorn has long gone...
Our town is home to the Headquarters of Halfords, though last I heard they were threatening to pull out!
