Butterfly Weed by daisymiller

Butterfly Weed

Butterfly weed is a species of milkweed found in eastern North America. It is a native plant in my state. The blossoms attract butterflies, specifically the queen butterfly and the Monarch butterfly. Some people plant seeds in Monarch butterfly way stations, where the Monarchs can get food as they migrate. I haven't seen many butterflies on my one Butterfly Weed plant, but I can always hope. My neighbor and I find it difficult to get this plant to establish. Last year, I had two plants. Only one plant made it through the winter. I hope to save the seed this year in an effort to get another plant growing. It takes up to three years to get one to bloom. One must have patience to grow this plant, but I find the efforts are well worth it.
Very pretty! Isn't it interesting that beautiful plants need "time" to come to full maturity?

This flower is a lovely colour not often seen in flowers - a orangey crimson look!

It's very pretty! I tried transplanting one from a friend's garden but it didn't take. I think my soil is really bad- not much grows well in it. But I keep trying! Lovely shot.

@maggiemae Some gardeners are growing a yellow blossom variety of this plant. I prefer this orange blossom variety myself.

@olivetreeann Thanks. Try planting some seed from your neighbor's plants. Transplanting this plant is often difficult.
