This 150+ year old Bur Oak tree is known as the "Grandfather Tree". It was moved about 1/3 mile to its current location in 2001. When it was moved the root ball was 30 feet wide and 6 feet deep and weighed approximately 250 tons. It is the city symbol and appears (leafed out) on city signs, vehicles, etc.
Great shot--I love all the tiny twigs you can see coming off the limbs. It is completely gnarly and OLD looking. That is an amazing story. I often wonder how big of a tree can be successfully transplated...now I know!
