Yesterday, I went with my gym budies to a race. THEY partcipated, I took photos. It was a 5k, 10k and half-marathon sponsored by the Coral Springs Fire Department in memory of a fallen hero:
Special Forces Warrant Officer and Green Beret, Joseph Lee Schiro, an American hero, a devoted father, son, brother and husband, was killed in action on October 6th, 2012. Joseph was killed by enemy forces during direct ground combat while serving as part of Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He was only 27 years old. Joseph is survived by his wife Diana Schiro, his sons Joseph Taylor age 4, and Nathaniel Lee age 9 mos, and daughter Caroline Grace, age 2, as well as his sister Stephanie and loving parents Holly and Joseph Schiro.
On of my friends, Nancy, ran her very first 5K with me a year ago. She was determined to run a 10k and this was her first. The race was held out in the vastness of the Everglades. Here, Nancy is about 200' from the finish. Our trainers, George (on the right) and his daugher (Megan) ran out to meet Nancy and run her in. Two other gym buddies also ran out to run her in. I love the look of determination on her face when she is almost there. BTW, she is also my physical therapist!
This is great! Love that everyone was honoring an American hero. Also love the story of your friend Nancy. Very nice to have so many people run her in. Her face says it all!
Great to honor a hero. My youngest son has thre more months in Afghanistan. We pray for his safe return every day. Sorry you couldn't run in this....maybe next year!
