Turnipseed and Son 1933

This shell of an old building was down the street from where we lived in Ocala. I passed it often, but never really stopped to look. I know that Turnipseed is a family here and they have a Chevrolet dealership. I did a little digging on Google and found they even had a dealership back during this time. I am wondering if it was where they sold cars. During the early 1940's, there were no cars to sell and he went into the farm seed business. That's really all the history I could readily find.

Footnote: turns out this was a filling station!
Interesting looking structure and a beautiful shot.

With a name like, Turnipseed" he was destined to end up selling seeds. don't you think? :)
Great architecture! Too bad it has been just left to the elements.

Very pretty structure. Something like this should be preserved by town.

@skipt07 I never thought of that until yesterday! I drove past again today and I am not sure it is left to the elements. There is a shed type building attached with a car there. I will have to ask my sister-in-law if she knows.

@bkbinthecity That's what all of Ocala looks like! It is beautiful there.

@bardejov I am wondering if the family is somewhat taking care of it. I saw a car there today.

@chard No park, just open land. It is so beautiful there with all the massive oak trees. This is on an s-curve in the street.

@gailmmeek Even my dad commented on the building today.

@nanderson Thanks so much for your comments, Nancy. I love the stone work.

@sisarie As much as I love history, I used to drive by all the time and never "wondered". Of course, that was before Google!

@lynnb yes, but apparently they had a stone connection and there are limestone pits in Ocala.

I know this comment is late. This was an old filling station. The Turnipseeds have been here since the 1800s. When the train ran through, the Turnipseeds ran a few things like the mail. Overtime it slowly stopped and business got slow. It's all still owned by family.

@jswartz1 Thanks for the information!

It was built by my great grandfather Jesse E Turnipseed. He and Addie lived in the old house that was behind it. My Grandfather Earle built the house North of there. And ran the store as well as working for the railroad. My grandmother Christine used to get bags of mail from a post left by the train and also was a teacher. My uncle Earle bought it all and lived with his wife and two boys there. Now my cousin Jesse and his family are there. Turnipseeds had both Turnipseed Chevrolet and Turnipseed Vw. Wilson Turnipseed, my granfathers cousin ran those I believe...... questions? Just ask

Oh yes.... most of that building is used as a warehouse with an updated apartment also. All of the property and around the corner to the interstate is family

@365prijectorgmike thank you for stopping by and giving me this information. It is such a beautiful building. We didn’t live in Ocala long, but my brother has been there over 30 years so we visit. We had a farm west of the interstate. Much of the original farm is now houses and my own house was torn down. πŸ™πŸ™πŸ™. My husband worked for WMOP, so Turnipseed is a well known name.
