I have decided to discover ancient Florida. There is a place, settled by the Ortona Indians centuries ago. This area is now a park, far from civilization, maybe 15 miles from the closest town. When we arrived, no one was there. Since I am a "newbie" to this type of exploration, I was a bit hesitant.
This boardwalk led into a dense canopy of oaks and palms. The sound of the crickets was so loud!
After walking through the oak and pine hammock, we came into the most beautiful open, grassy area and a lake. The lake was most likely built by the Indians. This settlement area has many canals, also built by these Indians.
There were so many butterflies flitting about.
This spot is 22' above sea level, the highest elevation in Glades County.
I am going to use this as today's word of Labor since the Indians labored long ago to make this settlement.
@bardejov Given the history in your area, there is much to discover closer to you. But if you ever find yourself in the area, it is worth a stop. If you do pass through Moore Haven, always be sure to do the exact speed limit and watch the bridge on US 27 as the limit drops from 65 to 35!
@squamloon Thanks for your support. I did see, when we were there, that it was a geocaching site. How fascinating that would be. It was a pretty cool place, especially knowing the history. We don't have much of it here.
