This is a portion of a mural in Lake Placid, FL depicting the citrus industry. I love the little smiley face. If you have never smelled orange blossoms, they are heavenly. Come take a drive through citrus country during bloom season.
Much of Florida's economy has centered on citrus. Ben Hill Griffin, Jr. was a citrus grower and donated over $20 million to the University of Florida who named the football stadium after him.
From Floridajuice.com:
In Florida, there are nearly 524,640 acres of citrus groves and more than 68 million citrus trees. Most citrus is grown in the southern two-thirds of the Florida peninsula, where probability for a freeze is lowest. After a series of freezes in the 1980s, citrus growers gradually migrated southward from central and northern regions, although Polk County in the central Florida remains the top citrus producing county.
Such a pretty mural! Lovely color and perfect capture of it. Thanks for the commentary also. WOuld love to smell the blossoms. Have been to Florida a few times, but perhaps not at the right time.
Beautiful mural and interesting story. My husband's uncle had a citrus grove in Frostproof, FL back in the 40s/50s. He eventually sold it to Minute Maid. I love that whole area.
