The Eastern part of the Everglades has many areas of Slash Pines, including Long Pine Key. They call them Slash Pines because the sap is collected to make turpentine. To do so, the early settlers would make a slash in the tree and hang a clay bucket. Some people are lucky enough to still find remnants of these clay buckets today. To me, this area reminded me of the Ocala National Forest, about 300 miles to the north.
