Much of the garden area at Vizcaya is made from coquina. Coquina is made in nature of the shells of mollusks, trilobites, brachiopods, or other invertebrates. When mined, it takes 1-3 years to dry in order to be used for building. It is nearly indestructible, though, withstanding so much foot traffic with no sign of wear.
@chard I don't think so. I'm not really sure how they "mined" it in the first place. I know that the fort in St. Augustine (hundreds of years old) also used the same stuff. You don't see anything "new" built with it. Might be protected?
