This is all that remains of the International Paper Mill that used to be on Tonawanda Island in North Tonawanda, NY. These were the treatment wells. When I was a child growing up in North Tonawanda, there were times you couldn't go near the Niagara River because the mill would vent something and a foul smelling cloud would drift off the island.
Sounds like a lovely place! :) It does make for a very interesting photo though and I would never have guessed what it was. B/W suits this quite nicely!
