Oh, I think I'm going to fall in love even more with my all-manual, wide-angle lens. It takes getting used to (and it is actually for a full-framed camera), but today's shot was a happy accident. This little boy (one of twins) was walking determinedly to get his brother. After I took this shot, I asked the father of the boys if they might come back and run around the tree for me and I would silhouette them, but alas, one boy had to go to the loo and they never came back.
I have a 365friend whose black and white work I admire so much (Sean @seanoneill) and I love his singular subjects out in fields or singled out on wide expanses. There are no such places here I've found (yet), but this tree was situated up on a hill just between two soccer fields and a bunch of other stuff. The wide-angle lens gave me what I needed and I could crop out a bit. Initially, I was going to give cloning/healing a go on the object on the right, but I decided it was essential to the photo in the end.
Pleased. Yes, very pleased. And today, I was reallllly getting tired of my bw or selective color goal for the month. Not now! Well, I am glad I will not be tied to my goal after 3 more days. It's hard to set a goal each month. I think I've got Photog ADD. :/
This does have a strong feeling of energy. Both the tree and the little boy are such strong objects that I am torn on deciding a center of interest. I like the positioning of the boy against the bright part of the sky.
It does have the Sean look to it -- brilliant shot with that determined little figure just making the scene so special. Love it! And can relate...b&w for two months straight may have not been my best decision. Looking forward to macro next month and hoping I don't get tired of it before the 31 shots are in place!
Love this! I keep seeing Chinese manual lenses for Canon by Samyang, is it one of these? I bought a Chinese macro ringflash and the quality blew me away. Fav by the way!
@jo13 I'm going to include this info in my profile (which I didn't before because I kept wanting to call the lens by the wrong name!). It's a Bower, 14mm 2.8 prime lens. I wish I had wonderful landscapes and sweeping downtown skies for this lens where I am, but I have to travel for it. It's not top of the line by any means, and I'm using it on my Rebel T2i for now. My husband was a dear and bought me two full framed lenses anticipating that someday, I'll upgrade. So nothing really works as it should, but so far, I'm managing. When this Bower and My Sigma 35mm, 1.8 go on a new camera, I'll have to get used to what they are supposed to do! The Sigma one acts like a nifty-fifty on my cropped sensor. And the fact that I am even able to say this stuff to you just blows my mind. One year and two months later, I do believe I've learned just a wee bit! Chuffed. But LR5, still a bear. Thanks for dropping in Jo! :)
@rvwalker I feel like it has two stories, but neither gets a central focus, which was hard for me. Using the graduated filter helped put the child in the spotlight. At least that was what I was going for.
Thanks for that Daryl, I'm toying with getting the 24mm but like you not really a landscape in sight!!! .....I'm, shhhhh 50 in a couple of weeks so might treat myself just can't decide on what quite yet. You mentioned LR5, I have LR4 and love it but can't upgrade to 5 as I am still stuck on Windows vista, are you not liking it???
@jo13 Sorry, I LOVE LR5, but I was so dumb and took it on without reading a single thing and muddled my way around. I'm getting it all back in order (or I think I am), but I just need to buckle down and read information so what I get is not some weird experiment. I did buy a very expensive book, and I'm going to read it so I use LR5 with more intention this year! Don't be afraid of it, and by all means update that system!!! Vista? Yikes! ;)
@jo13 And happy 30th coming up. ;) Go get a lens. I can say that wide-angle is useful for so much too. I would say it's worth it. The one I got (according to Alexis) is actually quite good (just all manual).
Ha ha just like you I bowled into LR without reading a single thing about how to use it probably and I now am unable to sort my pics out as they are all over the pc and 'of course' I changed the name and place of everything outside LR, the one golden rule and I broke it!!
Very good, and thank you ever so for the name check. I envy your urban landscapes too Daryl. This is a peach, landscape and street in one! Has to be a fav. I'm off to the ice hockey on Saturday, and my treat will be a HOTDOG. How I will smile!!
Faved this immediately and then got interrupted and couldn't comment until now. Love this shot. Great capture of both tree and little explorer. The B&W processing is great, too. I still need to properly organize my LR catalog but I did come across very informative tutorials on LR editing. They have helped me a lot. Check out Anthony Morganti - either on Youtube or his website.
Love the huge tree and the special lighting: dark above, light below (the opposite of what we generally see) and the little boy determined in his walk...great composition and atmosphere. Fav for me.
