Protest 1 by davidrobinson

Protest 1

The last few weeks in the UK have been truly historic, tumultuous in fact. The referendum held to decide whether the UK should remain in the European Union grew more and more acrimonious and ugly, even involving the assassination of a promising and popular left-of-centre politician by a right wing extremist. The referendum result (to leave the EU) sent shock waves through Britain and has entirely changed the course of British and European history. It has also exposed deep-seated and historic social and ethnic divisions in the UK. Extremists have seen the debate over inward migration as permission for racial and xenophobic attacks against the newcomers. In protest against this atmosphere of prejudice, demonstrations have been held across the UK. I joined one in my neighbouring town of Bournemouth in support of the migrants who play a vital role in the local economy.
