Murals on Grand Staircase of the Boston Public Library
I decided to go down to the library in Copley Square to escape the heat today and take advantage of their air conditioning. I had a wonderful time at the library, and for a while I wandered around taking photos (along with all the visitors taking photos).
These murals are part of a series by Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, painted on canvas in France and installed in these spaces in 1895. I often walk right by them. Today I focused on them more. These and many others surrounding the stair case represent the various branches of arts and sciences: from left to right, physics, pastoral poetry, and dramatic poetry.
