First Lilacs of the Season by deborahsimmerman

First Lilacs of the Season

I was astonished to see lilacs out already at Emmanuel Church as I walked by yesterday on Newbury Street. I'm not used to seeing lilacs in April.

Lilac Sunday at the Arboretum isn't until mid-May. When I first moved to Jamaica Plain in 1985, Lilac Sunday was the third Sunday in May. A number of years ago, it was moved to the second Sunday in May, as the lilacs were responding to a warmer climate. Of course, there are variations from year to year--sometimes the lilacs bloom ahead of Lilac Sunday and sometimes they lag behind. Most years they are magnificent on their big day. There are earlier and later varieties as well. The Arboretum has the second largest collection of lilacs in the U.S.
Gorgeous capture. I love the way you've composed this picture with the very pretty lilac in front of that beautiful building. I really love lilac but my tree has NO flowers on it this year :(
