@monikozi In UK old buildings of historical interest are either Grade 1 or Grade 2 listed.They cannot be altered in any way and repairs must be carried out to match the original.Ours is grade 2 listed .The roof is covered in stone slabs (called flags) these are becominh hrder and harder to find
Wow! Thanks for the explanation. I think @jon_lip Jon is right: that's what makes England such an interesting country. I am glad I learned this.

For instance, they may use these new insulated glass units (the thermopane windows?) but the frames must be of a specific design and made of wood, and they cost an awful lot.
