These large moths emerge from their holes in the ground after rains. There was a lot on our windows last night as they are attracted to lights.
As these moths are large and fat they are attractive to owls and frogmouths as food.
Evidence of their recent emergence from the ground is given away by the presence of their discarded skins at the entrance to their empty holes after rain. I will try to find a disgarded skin to photograph, but it is a bit wet at the moment, which I'm not complaining about as we need the rain.
please see other pic to get an idea of size of the moth http://365project.org/dianeburns/others-2014/2014-04-09
@macromover Hi Jan, I am only using the macro part of a two piece wide angle lens with macro attachment, I would dearly love to get a dedicated macro lens but am making do with this at the moment.
I really hate moths - they scare me - but it's interesting seeing a close-up pic like this. I don't think I'd ever be brave enough for a shot like this one! It's brilliant.
Great composition and detail.
