Cabbage tree by dide

Cabbage tree

This is the view from the top of Pukekohe Hill, looking south. The tree is a cabbage tree (Ti Kouka, Cordyline australis). The flowers and tiny berry-like fruit are important food for bees, tui and wood pigeon. Maori and early settlers ate the cooked tap roots, the core inside the trunk and the young green leaves (hence the name cabbage tree). This photo was taken yesterday, but I used the maize harvest photo first!
I like the composition and the sepia tones. Very nice shot.

Fantastic sense of scale - huge tree (cabbage) compared with what lies beyond. I like it. I like it a lot.
