Rangitoto Island

For overseas 365er's, this is a volcanic island just near to Auckland City. Auckland has around 17 craters close to the centre of the city and Rangitoto has a big crater at the summit. It is mainly volcanic scoria, but the hardy pohutukawa trees are slowly taking a hold. It is a short ferry ride from downtown Auckland and a great place to spend a day climbing to the summit and wandering around enjoying the views.

I do like the shape of this volcano. My son was in 'Rangitoto' house when he was in school in Auckland, so we walked to the top of it with him.
