Walnut flowers by dide

Walnut flowers

Here's your 'birds and bees' lesson for the day… Walnut trees have separate male and female 'bits'. The fine, feathery, female flowers can be seen above the tiny walnut buds, while the male catkins are totally separate. The pollen is delivered to the flowers by the wind, not needing any input from insects or birds.
Lesson in botanics. Love it

Walnuts trees are a mystery to me, so thank you for the pictures and description. Are there male and female trees or is the job done on just one tree?
October 10th, 2014
great collage.
October 10th, 2014
@ethelperry Just one tree. I believe that sometimes more trees are planted to give a greater chance of pollination, but we've only one tree and get heaps of nuts.

@dide Lovely, Dianne. Thank you for sorting me out on that. I hope you don't have marauding birds eating them just before you want to pick them for yourselves.
October 10th, 2014
@ethelperry No problem with the birds, but the labradors pick them up as soon as they drop off the tree (in April), crack them open and eat them!
