As NZ has a high rate of drownings per year, one of the schools I work at had some water safety experts visit, to teach students some skills. One of the activities was getting in and out of a kayak safely, wearing a correctly fitting lifejacket. The kids learnt heaps and had fun while doing so.
@alinz Might be the same people teaching them? This was taken a few days ago! Great that the kids are taught about life-jackets and safety precautions.
Looks fun. Cornwall has miles of coast and all children are taught to swim but this takes safety up a level. Well done to the school and what a great shot with all the water splashing
I find that a very strange statistic Dianne......every where I go in NZ there are pools & most schools have their own swimming pool so how come that is so? We haven't got half the facilities yet as far as I know the death rate by drowning is fairly small. It must be something to do with averages.....UK kids dont go swimming that often in general. The canoe seems to be floating in mid air!
@happypat It is awful how many drownings occur - I just looked up some stats - 2012: 98, 2013: 107, 2014: 90. Already this year there has been 22 people drowned. Many of these are not children, but male boaties who overload their boats or don't think life jackets are necessary. I guess NZ has so may harbours that recreational fishing is pretty high, combined with mild summer, autumn and spring weather, this means so many people fishing and generally in the water.
