Now you see it, now you don't

Took this a while ago, when the neighbours were felling a big macrocarpa for firewood. I hope the other two trees don't come down in a storm now that one has been removed. Macrocarpa are prone to blowing over, as they are shallow rooted.
Its always a private decision when one wants to fell a tree and may have safety issues! These are on their own here but now I've just realised you have people there! This makes these trees SO huge!

Bit of fire woo in those tree's.. they are very shallow rooted so can become a danger when this large.. fav

Like your diptych - perfect for the before and after scenario. I'm sorry to see these iconic giants disappearing from our landscape - The Leyland cypress that people plant these days for shelter are not nearly as interesting and just seem to block the view.

@snaphappi I agree - we planted Leyland Cyprus and they are ugly- and after 25 years they are beginning to die!

@dide Leylands are quite susceptible to canker which never seems to bother the macrocarpa cypress.

It's always sad to see beautiful old trees being cut down... says me with my lovely warm fire going! I hope the others survive. The little people in the shots really convey how tall the trees are.

It's like the game spot the six differences between the pictures

Great before and after shot - They were very large! I see that there are many macrocarpa being felled around here lately too. We did much the same when we bought our land a few years ago - they had spread so wide we kept finding more land!

Great shots.

Whoa! So surprising when you see this side by side.

Nice images, plenty of firewood for winter :)

Always sad to see trees go. We were in Newcastle today and there are still lots of trees down and not yet been cleared after our storm a while ago.

Great diptych but so sad to see trees coming down. I do hope the others manage to stay put

Two images beautifully captured in lovely colour and detail Dianne:)

So glad you put the people in for scale... these trees are huge! It's always sad (to me) when a tree comes down, but there are good reasons for it. Your side-by-side comparison really demonstrates the change nicely.

Very effective shot... conveys the emptiness it brings in.

Wonderful collage:)

Wonderful 'before' and 'after'. Both appear to be captured from an identical vantage. Very well remembered.
