Many schools around New Zealand have been doing special activities to celebrate Matariki. Matariki is the name for a cluster of stars which rise in midwinter. The Matariki celebrations involve kai (food) and whanau (family). Today we had whanau groups (mixed ages of children) doing lots of activities. When the groups came to my room, they made wheku masks which represent Maori carvings displayed in the meeting houses.
It's wonderful that you keep History alive for the children in this way. It is likely that they will remember Matariki as an important time in your country's history. Very nice collage.
