Shakespear Regional Park is at the end of a peninsula. It is relatively narrow and has been predator fenced since 2011. The fence is 1.7 km long and encloses 500 hectares of farmland and regenerating bush. Apart from mice, there are no other land based predators in the sanctuary. Little spotted kiwi were released into the sanctuary in 2017. We didn't see or hear any while we were there (but then again, we didn't venture out looking for them either.) It is so nice that New Zealand is now beginning to use bilingual signage.
Yes it’s good Dianne, looks good on those attractive signs. We went round Maungatautari…….it was impressive. Saw a baby kiwi, they were filming for a kidsTV programme.
@happypat Yes - we are lucky NZ has a few 'mainland islands' like Maungatautari - it is exciting to have such progress to help protect our vulnerable species.
