Man he must have had incredible patience to get that shot right there. i spent the day photographing birds yesterday and not once did one fly in my direction all awesome like that.
I've been to the place where he took this - hundreds and hundreds of gannets continuously landing and taking off. It's pretty predictable where they are going to take off, so I can see how he got this shot, but the public aren't allowed there (you can only view them from that building in the background). I was collecting some prints a while back in Cape Town and this exact picture had been printed A1 size on canvas, waiting for collection. It was the first time I saw it and I was blown away.
The day before yesterday a dove flew away when I was arriving by bike. The bird flew just in front of me for 20 meters, same distance as in above picture! Of course I couldn't grab my phone, enter my password, open Hipsta (mostly it's already open), choose lens and film (don't care about that in most cases too), aim and shoot, while minding trafic... Too bad. I'm definite not a pro!

I found it amusing to see on his facebook page that people who seem to actually know him write comments like "great pics, Tom!" hehe
