@zmaster2k Are "normal" point and shoots not proper cameras, then? Because they're not much different than an iPhone, except for maybe zoom. Heck, my iPhone outshoots the point and shoot I have any day....
The best camera is the one you have with you... Most people don't keep their pro body DSLR in their pocket ;)
I think a camera is anything that captures a moment. Anything from the pinhole box to the best $ can buy...which IMHO...with the wrong user can be crap. I appreciate all forms of capture. I was never closed off to the other methods of capture but I was set in my ways about photography not being true 'art' in the cense of paying big bucks to collect it. Until a couple of days ago when I saw the bellow camera and the work the 'artist' does with it. There is a fine line between a 'photographer' and an 'artist' and some manage to cross over. In answer to your question I am an iPhone LOVER. Mostly just because I have that quick camera that I can tweak the photo very quickly for a daily upload. But, it's still a capture...
There are MANY photos that I see on here that I am totally surprised that it was an iPhone capture...so I bought one :-)
@hmgphotos Im sorry i seem to of offended you?! without even mentioning point and shoot cameras?
im an iphone user and i love it.. does everything i want it to do as a phone etc.. but the camera isnt the best in the world is it.
its ok for the odd snap but that really about it..
i have a panasonic tz3 point and shoot with me most the time!
@zmaster2k No, you didn't offend me. Just not sure why it can't be considered a camera. What is a "proper" camera to you? Like I said, my iPhone takes better photos than a point and shoot I own, so I'm just curious if the point and shoot is considered proper, though it is inferior in quality?
@lilbudhha I do believe you should take a photo of yourself when you do it, so we can all laugh :P
I love my iPhone (4) camera since it's always with me. I know the 4S is better and I can't wait to see what the 5 will be capable of. I use a mirrorless/4-thirds/EVIL/whathaveyou for my middle ground between p&s and my dSLR, but really only because I needed to replace my old p&s so just chose to bump up to the mirrorless for roughly the same size.
I just started a photography course of study last week. One of my teachers is 50-something and has been studying and practicing photography for 40-something years. What I loved most about her was her complete openness to capturing an image by whatever means you have in your hand and her total lack of tolerance for considering one method "art" and other methods "not art." It's all legit in my book.
@zmaster2k I think the point @hmgphotos and @5unflow3r are trying to make is that if you don't consider the iPhone as a camera (or at least a proper camera) then is a pinhole or a DIY TLR camera or an old 35mm film p&s a "proper" camera?
" Popularity doesn't mean I have to like it or in fact rate it as a camera" No it doesn't mean you have to like it but why can't it be considered a camera? A camera makes a photo by imprinting an image on a medium of the users choice.....some are better than others but I have seen some high end DSLR users try and edit a photo to get that "pinhole/lomo/toy camera/etc" look.....so even though they are using a "proper" camera, they are trying to achieve an "improper" look.....food for thought.
Not trying to start an arguement, just hate to see someone bag on a camera because it's not high end.....
@zmaster2k So, just to make sure I'm clear on your points in this debate - because I don't like Canons, they are not cameras, and even though an iPhone contains a camera (both made by Apple), it's still not a camera?
@zmaster2k i get what you're saying, but you're wrong (for lack of a better way of putting it).
Yes, it's a phone....but I promise you that I use my iPhone camera more than I actually talk on it as a phone. I also have about $6K of "proper" camera equipment....but there's a time and place for it, IMO. I'm not interested in taking it to the lake - I take my iPhone and my SLR.
I'm not trying to be ugly, I'm genuinely wondering. I have heard people who hate the fact that the iPhoneographers of the world don't have to learn the "rules" of photography to be "good," but I've never heard it denounced as a camera alltogether.
I am curious, though....if an iPhone isn't a camera, then what do you call these (not photographs?)
@sdpace "I'm not trying to be ugly, I'm genuinely wondering. I have heard people who hate the fact that the iPhoneographers of the world don't have to learn the "rules" of photography to be "good," but I've never heard it denounced as a camera alltogether"
Finally getting somewhere! If I denounced it as a camera I'm very sorry that was not the intention!
But you pretty much just nailed what I don't like!
@zmaster2k well then you should just say that you're old fashioned. :) I've taken several classes that have brought up this point, and the real question becomes about supply and demand. almost anyone can be a photojournalist these days....you just have the be in the right place with a camera phone. As for everyday photography, I do enjoy experimenting with the different cameras and apps on my iPhone. I think having knowledge of the technical aspects of photography makes my "iphoneography" better than it might be otherwise, and I do think you can tell the difference between a photograph and snapshot, no matter what the recording mechanism is...iPhone, DSLR, SLR, Polaroid, whatever....
I would challenge you to buy one photography related app for your iPhone and have a little fun. I'd suggest Hipstamatic. I also noticed that you like to do selective coloring in some of your shots....there are several apps that let you do that with images you take with your iPhone. :)
@zmaster2k The reason I brought up the pinhole camera specifically is that the majority of the time it is some sort of box (oatmeal, match box, etc) with some photo paper inside....kinda like the iPhone is a phone with a camera inside....following your line of logic the matchbox would still be a matchbox, not a pinhole camera.....that's all.
Kinda like you're on your iPhone posting to the internet....makes it a computer too, one could argue...not as good as a laptop or desk top though, but still functionable as a computer.....
@hmgphotos Heidi, what your pockets are not big enough for your dslr, four lenses and a flash ;) Hey, on this site I think my dslr and iphone are tied on pop page apperances (thanks for the favs)
@gurry I do not care for canon's what so ever unless it is my point and shoot and I think your camera may be broken with a kitty cat sitting inside.
This was a cool discussion and debate until people started straight up making fun of someone for their opinion that you disagreed with. It would be pretty awesome if the making fun part of the discussion would end? yeah?
@zmaster2k Yup... Obviously you are not really posting to the site because you are using a phone, not a proper computer and because you don't have a proper keyboard you cannot possibly know any of the rules of writing... and yet here you are writing! Come back when you learn the rules and are using a proper computer... and proper grammar. FYI... it's "should have just kept quiet" not "should of just kept quiet."
I would like to know your definition of a proper camera and how many of the rules one needs to learn in order to be considered a photographer. And is it ok with you if we just like to take pictures... and don't consider ourselves to be photographers. I use several cameras, know some photography rules, but don't call myself a photographer... and I LOVE the camera on my iPhone!
I think quality cameras on phones are great, as it's not always convenient to lug an slr or bridge camera everywhere. However, I don't think they can replace a point and shoot pocket camera.
I love my iphone camera (or more specifically the apps), I also love my p&s and my new DSLR...there is a time and a place for them all. I believe photography is about the photographers eye - what each of us sees when we look through the viewfinder (or look at the screen)....that's the talent...not what equipment you use...
@beautifulthing Canons are by no means... cameras. They are trash, complete trash! Because they're mind control devices with cameras inside, they are nothing but mere mind control trash devices. :P
Great to have a fairly good ish camera in your pocket but tbh its no replacement for a proper camera... never will be.
i see you can now get lens's for them aswell... really?! WTF
The best camera is the one you have with you... Most people don't keep their pro body DSLR in their pocket ;)

@shadesofgrey @5unflow3r
Guys, I got this.
This is a "proper" camera, no doubt. (edited)
@gurry i think you might have some hair on your sensor.
@gurry That camera pic is awesome. Meow.
"No it doesn't mean you have to like it but why can't it be considered a camera?"
Because its a phone! Not a camera.
@beautifulthing no of course not you entitled to your opinion.
I'm sure if apple make a camera it'll be great!
Posted this message using my iPhone oh the irony....will this start another discussion as to why I'm using this and not my laptop/pc/mac?
@mabelkitty @sdpace @shadesofgrey @5unflow3r @gurry
Could you be a touch clearer that made absolutely no sense?
