This is not a Photo that I have taken. While going through my mothers photos. I found some old negatives that belonged to my Uncle Elmer that he or one of his friends had taken in world war II.Me wanting to see what was on the negatives got them developed. Most came out really good. This one I just throught looked cool........Now what to do with the 20 WWII photos I have.Only one looks like it might be my Uncle. The rest are of young men I don't know.Feel to post to facebook would be like giving them away to Facebook.Or is the water mark I put on them going to save them

Put 'em up on FB, you never know the people in them might get to see them... well, their surviving relatives anyway.

And "save them" from what? The copyright isn't yours, might as well make them public domain, no?

@wildernesswillie the compression rate facebook uses is much like it is here. If someone wanted to print any of the images, they wouldn't even be able to get a decent 4x6.

I wonder if there is a museum in your area that might like them? Or perhaps a VFW post where they could be displayed and people could comment if they know any of the people in the pictures. WWII memorial nearby?

Willie, @mikehamm mentioned a museum. The US Army War College in Carlisle, PA has a wonderful museum (The Heritage Center? Can't remember the name) that actively reaches out for artifacts. They did a project "The Army in your Attic" a few years back and got some amazing stuff.

They might be interested or have some advice or network for you.

@intymalcolm If not mine then who's.. Iam the one with the negatives.Seen on this week artist challenge Edward Weston. I seen some of his photos are still selling for money and he has been dead a long time. What makes his copyrighted and for sale by his family and friends or who ever has them. Then when It comes to my uncles photography It belongs to no one so it should belong to everone
If it was left up to my older brother a big fire would be built and all of my mothers old photos would be burent up.I feel I saved them and like Edward Weston photos I don't mine someone looking at them,But not to treat them as there own
I will more than likey post them to facebook for all to see. Just because I think it would be the fastest and seen by the most. Then maybe some of the other familys will get to see them Because I would not know how to find them.....I don't trust facebook not to call them there own if not today but some day.I have heard a water mark will stop them.So that what I have done

@wildernesswillie Owning the negs doesn't grant you copyright. Not even with the messed up US Disney/Sonny Bono copyright laws... which are a nightmare to navigate, so frankly I have no idea. You'd have to ask a lawyer

However, my opinion is that, well, I'd put them in the public domain. Which doesn't mean somebody else can treat them as theirs, quite the opposite, it means that they become everybody's and not somebodies.

Oh, and the watermark won't make a inkling of a difference. Two minutes with the clone tool and it's gone. But, you know, whatever makes you happy :)

Well done on saving them though, glimpses into the past like this certainly shouldn't be burned.

@wildernesswillie I like @mikehamm @ridley mike & michelle's idea. VFW's and local small museums might have an interest. I know the VFW's and American Legion where I live always appreciate any respect paid to soldiers. Can't imaginable it would be very different in your neighborhood. :)

@wildernesswillie The way I understand copyright, it remains the person who took an image/created whatever. For certain things, copyright ends a certain number of years after death of the author, at which point the work is no longer bound by copyright laws in the same way. In cars where someone dies but is still making money off their works, then royalties can be left to someone else. The right to determine who can use work that is still under copyright may also be left to someone, but this doesn't mean they own the copyright.

On a different note, these photos are a fascinating find. Why not find out what regiment your uncle was in and see if they have their own archives. They might even be able to identify some of the other people in the photos.

Sounds like Uncle Elmer was one to be proud of! A true hero.

Here is the website for the Army Heritage Center. I don't know if you live anywhere near PA, but it really is worth a trip if you're interested in this type of stuff.
http://www.carlisle.army.mil/ahec/ It looks like you can do some research on their site.

They have an AMAZING research library -- just going into it made me want to write a book on some obscure piece of military history. They also have an outdoor installation of things like a Quonset hut, a helicopter, etc. Really an interesting place.
